Text-based browser MMORPGs
Text online games came long before 3D: the MUDs of the 1990s, the browser games of the early 2000s — and many of them are still alive. We played them and love them. Here are the big ones, and how Terrace Wars differs.
Torn
A text-based browser RPG about a crime city, running since 2004: crimes, businesses, a gym and faction wars.
Iron Realms: Achaea, Aetolia, Lusternia, Starmourn
Text worlds by Iron Realms: Achaea (since 1997) and Lusternia are fantasy, Aetolia is dark fantasy, Starmourn is science fiction. Deep combat, politics and role-play in the browser or a MUD client.
Galatium
An English text-based browser MMORPG with an arena, gladiators and pirates, classes, clans and loot.
Tale («Сказание»)
One of the first Russian-language multiplayer browser games, online since 1999: a huge fantasy world, thousands of quests and castle sieges.
And Terrace Wars
The same spirit — long progression, community, groups, a player economy — but football instead of fantasy and space: 423 real clubs, stand battles on real match days, crews and district wars. And an illustrated interface instead of pure text.
